How often do you visit the dentist? Twice a year? Maybe only when something hurts? Now, imagine going 18 years without a single dental visit. No cleanings, no fillings, no education on oral health – just enduring the pain until it becomes unbearable.
Our scholarship students’ first visit to the dentist happens when they join our program. To give them the best possible start in their college journey, we must first ensure they are healthy—and that includes their oral health.
As you can imagine, after 18 years without dental care, the need for treatment is significant. X-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions and crowns (replacement teeth) are common procedures. CVF covers these costs, and while dental care in Cambodia is much more affordable than in the U.S. the most pressing treatments average $600 per student – an amount that can transform a life.

Oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease don’t just cause pain and discomfort. They can lead to infections, tooth loss, and even malnutrition, stomach problems, and chronic inflammation. Left untreated, these issues can drain a child’s energy, making it harder to focus, learn, and reach their academic potential.
During our December 2024 visit to the Prey Touch schools we launched an oral health awareness campaign.
Having worked 30 years in the dental field, Silke was deeply disheartened by the poor oral health conditions she observed during her last two visits. We knew we needed to go beyond treatment and address the root of the problem – beginning with oral hygiene education. If we can reach children at a young age, we can make a lasting difference in their lives. Thanks to Silke’s background in dental technology, we’re now working to integrate dental education into the classrooms.

We want to give students the knowledge and care they need for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Partnerships – working towards a common goal
The nonprofit organization World Smiles Mission (based in Lafayette, IN) generously donated 200 toothbrushes, toothpastes, cups, and floss, which we distributed to the children during the Preamnil Primary School’s opening ceremony. The colorful cups to hold the toothbrush were a hit with the kids!
